Does AI Need Quality Control?
Artificial intelligence is becoming a vital tool for businesses and nearly impossible to avoid as consumers. Companies are rushing to release AI automation systems to keep up with their competitors despite their models being insufficient in responding to user issues. While users are being left in crisis and bad actors abuse the AI models, it poses the question: Does the AI revolution need quality control?
Major Incident
Earlier this year, Meta announced that they were set to launch AI support tools for users to get “24/7 help for nearly any support issue”. Just as soon as the Meta AI support assistant was released, hackers found a way to trick the bot into providing them with login access to virtually any Instagram account. An estimated 20,000 accounts were exploited, and personal information such as email addresses, phone numbers and birthdates were exposed. The AI chatbot prevented affected users from escalating their issue to a human and the exploit was active for months before Meta patched it in late May.
Plan of Action
The damage highlights the cybersecurity risk that comes with the rampant integration of AI. With fields like accounting and healthcare expected to adopt AI systems into their operations, it has become essential for cyber safety and security to be prioritized. Organizations have the responsibility of training employees on how to handle sensitive information and building out incident responses for possible exploits. Setting guidelines for staff AI usage will be key to preventing data breaches.
